Turkey rescues some 160 migrants in the Aegean Sea and accuses Greece of expelling them into its waters

MADRID, 13 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Turkish authorities have claimed to have rescued about 160 migrants in the waters of the Aegean Sea and have once again accused the Greek Coast Guard of expelling the boats into its waters to prevent them from reaching Greek shores.

The Turkish Coast Guard has indicated that a total of 159 people were rescued in various boats located off the coast of the provinces of Canakkale, Balikesir and Mugla, according to the Turkish state news agency, Anatolia.

Likewise, the authorities of the province of Kocaeli, in the northwest of the country, have announced the deportation of 18 migrants who entered the country irregularly, while thirteen alleged human traffickers were arrested on Monday in the province of Van (east ).

Turkey has lashed out at Greece in recent years, accusing Athens of illegally expelling ships arriving from Turkish shores from its waters.

Tension has risen in recent months in the eastern Mediterranean area as Greece and Turkey embark on a maritime dispute over hydrocarbon exploration in the area. Both countries are also at odds over Cyprus.
