The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, has assumed the baton of command, acknowledging that his predecessor in Downing Street, Liz Truss, made "mistakes" in his scarce seven weeks in office and has promised that he will work to win the trust of the citizens, although "difficult" decisions will be necessary in the medium term.

Sunak has appeared before his office shortly after receiving the commission from King Carlos III and formally becoming the country's 57th prime minister, the third in less than two months and the youngest in the last two centuries. He comes to office after an express succession, in which he was the only one to obtain the necessary guarantees to be the leader of the Conservative Party.

Sunak has appealed to his own experience as finance minister in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic to vindicate his resume, while defending its legitimacy. In this sense, he has pointed out that the vast majority obtained in the 2019 elections was not an "individual property", associated with Boris Johnson, but rather was the endorsement of a program.

The new leader has promised to follow this program, for example, to take advantage of the "opportunities" left by the UK's exit from the EU and "balance" the economy, but at the same time he has assumed that he is doing so at a time of crisis "deep", in which the country has not yet recovered from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and is now facing those derived from the "Putin war" in Ukraine.

Sunak has applauded her predecessor's "determination" in trying to meet current challenges -- "she was not wrong to want growth," she said -- and her "noble goals." "Some mistakes were made", even if they were "without bad intention", he has acknowledged.

"If I have been elected party leader and prime minister, it is to solve it and the work begins immediately," stressed Sunak, who aspires to "unite" the country and win the trust of the citizens, who technically have not voted for him as prime minister. and they are now inclined, according to the polls, to grant a new majority to the Labor Party.

"Together we can achieve incredible things. We will create a future that is worth the sacrifices we have made," he said.
