Logar and Musar will compete for the Slovenian Presidency in the second round, according to the first results

The conservative candidate Anze Logar and the independent Natasa Pirc Musar will compete for the Presidency of Slovenia after being the two most voted options in the first round of the Slovenian presidential elections, held this Sunday, according to official results that are still partial.

Logar, candidate of the Slovenian Democratic Party, has obtained 35 percent of the vote, according to official data corresponding to 11 percent of the count, and aspires to become the first conservative president of the country since its independence. Logar is an ally of former Nationalist Prime Minister Janez Jansa, reports the Bloomberg news agency.

Pirc Musar, on the other hand, has achieved 26 percent of the vote. She is a lawyer and has the support of new formations such as the Pirate Party or the Young European Greens Party.

The third most voted candidate was the candidate of the ruling party, the Freedom Movement, and former speaker of Parliament, Milan Brlez, with 16 percent of the vote.

The second round of elections is scheduled for November 13. The presidential office is mainly ceremonial under Slovenian law, although he is the head of the Armed Forces and appoints judges of the Constitutional Court and the governor of the Bank of Slovenia.

An eventual victory for Logar could make it difficult for the progressive Prime Minister Robert Golob, who is trying to dismantle all the reforms established with Jansa since a left-wing coalition brought him to power in April.
