Bolsonaro confesses his intention to remain active in Brazilian politics

MADRID, 1 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has affirmed his intention to remain active in the country's politics and has maintained that the Lula da Silva government "will not last long", all this in his first public event since he left for the United States.

In an event organized in Florida by the Yes Brazil USA group attended by supporters of the former president, Bolsonaro has set his sights on the 2024 municipal elections, which he has described as "very important."

"We cannot abandon politics. Politics is part of our lives. I am 67 years old and I intend to remain active in Brazilian politics," he stressed during his speech, according to 'Folha de S.Paulo'.

In this sense, he has maintained that the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva "will not last long." "You can be sure, in a short time we will have news. By itself, if this government continues in the line that it has shown in these first 30 days, it will not last long," he said.

In this sense, the former president has criticized the perpetrators of the assault on the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia, although he has specified that there have been injustices.

"We regret what some inconsequential people did on January 8. That is not our right. It is not our people," he said, before emphasizing that many people have been arrested.

"That is not terrorism by our legislation. There are people who must be individualized by invasion or predation. Each one pays for what they have done," he stressed.

Previously, the former president has applied for a tourist visa to be able to stay in the United States for six more months, according to one of his lawyers in an interview with the British newspaper 'Financial Times'.

"Florida will be their temporary home away from home (Brazil)," said the lawyer, Felipe Aleixandre, founder of the AG Immigration firm. The former president "needs some stability," according to Aleixandre, who has left open the possibility of Bolsonaro applying for a permanent visa.

Bolsonaro himself stated a few days after having to be admitted to a hospital on January 9 due to abdominal problems derived from the stabbing he suffered in 2018, that he would return to Brazil earlier to be treated by his doctors. However, he remains in Orlando, Florida.
