A song from the 2019 Hong Kong protests is played instead of the anthem at another sports competition

MADRID, 4 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Asian Classic Weightlifting Championships in Dubai have played the 2019 Hong Kong protest-related song instead of the national anthem after athlete Susanna Lin won the gold medal, just a few weeks after it happened in the men's final of a rugby tournament.

After 15 seconds, the athlete made a T to indicate that there was an error with the playback, as indicated by the protocol established by the Hong Kong authorities, after which the organizers played the national anthem.

The Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee issued these guidelines after a similar error occurred at an Asian rugby union tournament.

The sports authorities have indicated in a statement collected by the public broadcaster, RTHK, that they had provided the organizers of the competition with the correct version of the national anthem. They have also highlighted that the athlete and the team manager have responded in a "timely and appropriate" manner during the incident.

They have also requested the Hong Kong Weightlifting and Weightlifting Association to investigate the case with the organizer and the Asian Weightlifting Federation and submit a report.

For its part, the country's government has stated that it "deplores and strongly opposes" the error committed, to which it attaches "great importance", although it accepts that the incident has been responded to in accordance with the established guidelines and urges that the report is available as soon as possible.
