They find a senator from Paraguay dead on the shore of a lake

MADRID, 1 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Paraguayan authorities found the lifeless body of Senator Zulma Gomez in the waters of Lake Acaray, in the department of Alto Paraná, in the east of the country, on Sunday.

Around 2:00 am (local time) on Sunday, the legislator's husband reported the disappearance of his wife, who had been celebrating a political activity with young people the previous day.

Police found a pair of sneakers and a mattress near a dock. According to witnesses consulted by the Paraguayan newspaper 'La Nación', the senator used to always be alone and reflect outdoors.

Hours later, firefighters, with the help of the Police, found Gómez's body, which was 20 meters from the pier, on a shore. "He swallowed a lot of water, tried to breathe, has signs of agony and there is no doubt about anything," said the forensic doctor Pablo Lemir in statements to the aforementioned media.

The autopsy carried out by the forensic police determines that Gómez has died of a "mechanical suffocation by submersion" or drowning that would have been accidental, according to Lemir.

"The conclusions at the moment, with macroscopic elements, make us think that the cause of death would be pulmonary edema in the context of mechanical suffocation due to submersion (...) The context and orientation (of the wounds) make us think that we are talking about someone who slips on a solid, somewhat sharp part and ends up with a blow to the head," Lemir detailed after the autopsy.

Likewise, and although the autopsy seems to confirm that the senator fell into the water and drowned, the Paraguayan authorities have emphasized that "the case is still open" and that they will continue "ruling out hypotheses," the newspaper 'Última Hora' reported.

The death of Zulma Gómez, 61, a senator from the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, has shaken the entire political spectrum in Paraguay. Specifically, the President of Parliament, Óscar Salomón, has declared three days of mourning in Congress.
