The UN reminds Russia that the targets attacked in Ukraine are protected by international law

MADRID, 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The UN Human Rights office has been "deeply concerned" by the wave of attacks perpetrated on Monday by Russian forces on various cities in Ukraine and has recalled that international law prohibits the bombing of civilians or infrastructure " essential" for their survival.

The United Nations estimates that "at least twelve civilians" died as a result of the attacks, perpetrated at a "particularly shocking" hour, when the population was going to work or taking their children to class in the morning, according to the High Commissioner's spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

Both the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and the Ukrainian, Volodomir Zelenski, identified among the targets energy facilities, "at least twelve" in eight different regions, according to the UN, which fears the effects of these bombings on the population now that it is approaching winter and lower temperatures.

"We urge the Russian Federation to refrain from a new escalation", claimed Shamdasani, who recalled that the UN observation mission continues to document the human rights abuses that are being committed on the ground and that could constitute crimes. of war or against humanity.

The Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is also examining these abuses, after successive attacks on civilians have been confirmed in recent months.
