The PSOE offers the PP to agree to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP

MADRID, 14 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PSOE offers the PSOE an agreement, via an amendment to the resolutions in the Debate on the State of the Nation, to promote the increase in the Defense budget to place it at 2% of GDP, as was made clear at the recent NATO Summit in Madrid.

The socialist parliamentary group has proposed modifications to the approach of the popular in terms of security and marks that spending objective, aimed at "modernizing and improving the military capabilities" of the Armed Forces.

Precisely the increase in the military budget has caused discrepancies with United We Can, its partner in the Executive, which has repeatedly demanded not to increase arms investment to prioritize social measures, even demanding the call for the coalition's follow-up pact to open a serene debate and resolve those differences. Moreover, several parliamentary partners have warned that this option only leaves the PSOE the way to resort to the PP to carry out this rise in Defense items.

Meanwhile, the socialists have argued that doubling the defense budget is necessary in the context of the war in Ukraine to preserve security.

In the amendment that the PSOE offers to the PP, and to which Europa Press has had access, the socialists bet on continuing to promote the development of "security and defense awareness" in Spanish society, assuming the "costs" associated with her as "inherent in the adequate maintenance of well-being and safety".

To this end, says the text, "a scenario of increasing the Defense budget will be promoted to achieve the objective of 2% of GDP set at the Wales Summit in 2014", together with the possibility of "strengthening" the Technological Base and Industrial Defense to promote economic growth and "highly qualified" employment.
