The PP denounces that the Government prevents Feijóo from visiting the troops deployed in Latvia and asks Sánchez to revoke it

'Génova' planned this visit for next week and believes that Defense has vetoed this displacement at the indication of Moncloa

The PP has denounced this Tuesday that the Government has prevented the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, from visiting the Spanish troops deployed in Latvia, a fact that it has branded as "unusual". For this reason, it has summoned the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to revoke that "wrong" and "incomprehensible" decision that, according to the party, had "the support of the competent authorities of the Atlantic Alliance."

In a statement released by the PP, the first opposition party has assured that "no Spaniard can understand that the opposition leader is denied a meeting of encouragement and support with the Armed Forces deployed abroad."

According to what the party has reported, the PP raised with the Ministry of Defense its desire that Alberto Núñez Feijóo, in his capacity as opposition leader, pay a visit to the Spanish troops deployed in Latvia.

Despite the "initial understanding" in the contact established with the Ministry of Defense and "having the approval of the NATO commanders", the Government has finally decided "not to authorize the visit", as explained by the 'popular'.

The PP considers that the decision of the Ministry of Defense occurs "without any prior consultation regarding the public or private use that would be made of the visit, and despite the commitment to go to the Latvian base on the dates and with the indications that the Government deems most pertinent".

The Popular Party has indicated that foreign policy and defense are State policies that require maximum unity and internal cohesion. As he recalled, the Popular Party has always made itself available to the Government to help as necessary in achieving Spain's common objectives and in protecting strategic interests, both national and European.

"All the governments of Spanish democracy, regardless of their political orientation, have always allowed visits by political leaders of other parties to Spanish troops deployed on missions abroad, as it is a way of honoring the work and courage of the more than 3,000 men and women of the Armed Forces who today carry out their mission in the service of Spain outside our borders", the PP assured in the aforementioned statement.

The PP considers that the decision to prevent Feijóo from this displacement is "unusual" and also "contravenes the most elementary good practices and uses of a democracy." In his opinion, this incident "demonstrates once again that there is no thematic area in which the Government does not function in a sectarian way, trying to exclude an important part of Spanish society."

SÁNCHEZ HAS TO REVOKE THE DECISION

For all these reasons, the PP has "expressly" urged the Prime Minister to revoke this "deeply wrong and incomprehensible decision" so that the opposition leader can visit the Spanish troops deployed in Latvia as planned, and that "it already has the support of the competent authorities of the Atlantic Alliance".

According to the 'popular', if that decision is not revoked, the Government would be "projecting an image of weakness" of Spain in a matter of State such as defense and commitment to the allies "at a crucial moment in the future of Europe".

Sources from the PP leadership have told Europa Press that the party was planning Feijóo's visit to Latvia for next week. In addition, they consider that the Defense's rejection of this displacement is actually an "indication of Moncloa".

In its statement, the Popular Party has expressed its "gratitude" to the men and women who make up the Spanish Armed Forces and risk their lives inside and outside of Spain, in defense of peace and freedom, "especially in times as serious as the current ones due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine".
