Sánchez does not expect reductions in sentences for corrupt after the embezzlement reform

He affirms that the Spanish are no longer worried about corruption since he governs

MADRID, 27 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, pointed out this Tuesday, given the possible reduction in sentences for those convicted of embezzlement, that the reform of this crime includes a transitory provision that "guarantees that the sentences are maintained for cases of irregular budgetary deviation". and "without downward revision of sentences."

This is how he responded at a press conference after the Council of Ministers after being asked if he feared a series of reductions and releases of those convicted of corruption for the modification of the crime of embezzlement that was finally approved last week in the Senate.

Sánchez has indicated that this transitory provision has been included in the reform of the Penal Code --which includes the repeal of sedition-- and has added that "it was the subject of debate (...) in the law of 'only yes is yes '".

In line, he recalled that before the motion of censure against Mariano Rajoy, one of the three main concerns of the Spanish, according to the CIS, was corruption, and that the front pages of the media spoke of the 'Kitchen' operation or of 'Gürtel', "linked to the PP". While now, he has added, corruption ranks number 18 among the main concerns of the citizen.

Thus, Sánchez has defended that this information is not coincidental and is due to the commitment to democratic regeneration of the progressive coalition government that he presides over.

In addition, the President of the Government has indicated that the modification of the crime of embezzlement, which entails reductions in penalties, is in line with standardizing the Penal Code to the standards of other European democracies. And he has warned that "the crime is not decriminalized or decriminalized" but that it is "approved".

"We standardize crimes with European democracies, they are not decriminalized", he insisted on a third question on the matter, to then stress that in fact Spain is "at the forefront" because a new crime is typified "which is the unjustified enrichment of political leaders".
