Siemens Gamesa will supply 15 wind turbines for the third largest wind farm in South Korea

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Siemens Gamesa has closed a contract with the South Korean promoter SK D

The park, which is expected to start operating in 2024, will generate enough electricity to supply 64,000 homes and is part of South Korea's efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and boost the goal of generating renewable energy until 20 % in the electricity mix by 2030.

Located in Gunwi-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do province, the Gunwi Wind Farm will be equipped with one of the most powerful wind turbines on the local market to make the most of the wind resources in this mountainous area.

The company has highlighted that South Korea has been one of the first Asian countries to commit to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with announced plans to develop wind power, both onshore and offshore, in a bid to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and avoid carbon emissions.

At the end of 2021, the country had wind installations of approximately 1.7 gigawatts (GW), with wind power's share of less than 1% of total electricity generation.

Through this new contract, Siemens Gamesa will gain market share in Asia-Pacific, where it has installed more than 11 GW since the 1980s in countries such as China, Pakistan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

In the offshore business, in 2019 the company completed the installation of the first 128 MW offshore wind project in Taiwan, and has accumulated firm orders for around 2 GW and preferential supply agreements for 1 GW.
