Raquel Sánchez highlights the advances in the AVE project to Lisbon and will study connection alternatives

MADRID, 25 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, assured this Thursday that her Department "has not stopped working at any time" on the Madrid-Lisbon AVE project and highlighted that progress continues to be made both on the part Spanish as the Portuguese in the different sections that are on the table for now.

Sánchez, in statements to Onda Cero collected by Europa Press, recalled that since the XXXI bilateral Summit between Spain and Portugal was held in the Portuguese city of Guarda in October 2020, the bilateral coordination mechanisms were reinforced to promote rail connections between both countries.

"More than reactivating this project, we have not stopped working on it at any time," defended the minister, who added that Portugal is currently working on the works on the high-speed section between Évora and Caia and proposing modernization actions in other sections.

Asked about the Portuguese preference for the AVE between Madrid and Lisbon to pass through Galicia or Salamanca instead of through Badajoz, as the Spanish Government wants, the minister indicated that they will work with Portugal on the different alternatives.

"Regardless of the alternatives that may be raised in the coordination tables, in what already exists in the table, progress is being made both in Spain and in Portugal," he concluded.

In another order of things, the minister has advanced that more than 60,000 free passes have already been issued through the Renfe website since the period for their acquisition by users began yesterday.

Recurring commuters on Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia Convencional who purchase the new free subscription will be able to travel on these trains from 1 September until the end of the year. In the case of the new high-speed passes and Avant passes, the period of use is one more month, until January 31, 2023, and they can be purchased until December 31, 2022.
