Poland hands out iodine tablets to all its firefighters amid clashes in Zaporizhia

MADRID, 20 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Polish Ministry of the Interior has delivered iodine tablets to all professional firefighters in the country as a preventive measure against the danger posed by an accident at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia.

"As part of crisis management and civil protection activities, in connection with media information about the fighting in the region of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, tablets containing potassium iodide were delivered last week to the headquarters of the district of the State Fire Service", the Ministry detailed in a statement.

As announced, this is a "standard procedure" provided for by law and used in the event of "a possible radiological emergency."

However, the Polish Executive has clarified that, for the moment, "there is no such threat and the situation is continuously monitored by the National Atomic Energy Agency."

"The services responsible for state security are in constant preparation and the adequate amount of potassium iodide is ensured for each Polish citizen," the letter states.

Also, the Polish authorities have reminded that doctors and specialists do not recommend the preventive use of potassium iodide on their own.
