Czech Republic sets presidential election date for January 2023

MADRID, 27 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the Senate of the Czech Republic, Milos Vistrcil, announced this Monday that the presidential elections will be held on January 13 and 14, 2023.

"In accordance with the Constitution of the Czech Republic, I scheduled the elections to elect the President of the Republic for January 13 and 14, 2023," he said.

Thus, he explained that the announcement was made "with enough time to guarantee that a fair process is carried out" and confirmed that some of the main candidates are already campaigning.

In the event that no candidate obtains more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round, the second round is scheduled to be held on January 27-28, according to reports in the newspaper 'Lidovky'.

The campaign will officially start on July 1 and the current president, Milos Zeman, will not be able to run as he is already serving his second term, which lasts five years.

Of the fifteen candidates already announced, two start as favorites to win the elections, according to the polls. They are Petr Pavel, a retired military man who served as chairman of the NATO Military Committee and as chief of the General Staff of the Republic's Armed Forces, and Andrej Babis, a former prime minister and leader of the ANO party.
