The number of women victims of gender violence has increased by 9.57% in the summer months of 2023, compared to July, August and September 2022, as reported this Friday by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) in the 'Quarterly Report on Gender Violence' from the Domestic and Gender Violence Observatory.

Specifically, according to the CGPJ, between the months of July and September of this 2023, a total of 52,545 women were victims of gender violence, 9.57% more than in the same period of 2022, in which 47,955 were recorded. . Likewise, it has increased by 16.36% in relation to the months of January, February and March 2023 and by 11.64% in relation to the period from April to June.

Thus, it points out that the rate of victims of gender violence per 10,000 once again experienced an interannual increase, with the national average for the third quarter of 2023 standing at 21.4 compared to the rate of 19.8 a year ago.

Furthermore, it explains that for another quarter, the proportion between victims of Spanish nationality and victims of other nationalities is repeated, the former being 64.44% of the total number of female victims. The number of minor victims under guardianship rose to 138, a figure 23% lower than that registered in the same quarter of 2022 (181) and very close to that of the second quarter of this year (136).

Likewise, during the third quarter of the year, the number of complaints filed in judicial bodies and before the State Security Forces and Bodies has increased, with 53,480 complaints, which represents an increase of 8.09%, in relation to the data from a year ago. The increase is also significant in relation to the first and second quarters of 2023. Complaints have increased by 15.44% in relation to the first quarter of the year and 10.89% in relation to the second.

It also points out that the percentages of complaints filed based on who the complainant was remained practically "without variations" during the quarter analyzed. In two out of three cases (38,758, 72.47%), the complaints were filed by the victim herself in court or at the police station.

Along these lines, the complaints filed by the victim's entourage were once again "very lower" (986), with 1.84% of the total, although those derived directly from police reports showed a slight year-on-year increase, which represented 15%. .28% of the total. Meanwhile, those caused by injuries were reduced to represent 7.81%. Complaints filed by third parties also decreased, which in the third quarter of the year represented 2.59% of the total.

On the other hand, the number of victims who took advantage of the exemption from the legal obligation to declare increased by 18.76% compared to the same period in 2022, which means that 9.82% of the victims made this decision. In the quarter analyzed, there were 5,159 female victims who refused to testify against their attacker; Of them, 2,899 (56%) were Spanish and 2,260 (44%) had other nationalities.

Along these lines, the report also states that between July and September of this year, a total of 13,798 protection orders were requested from judicial bodies, 12.97% more than a year ago. Of them, 11,585 were initiated by the violence against women courts and 2,213 by the courts acting on duty.

Protection orders adopted totaled 9,754, 17% more than a year ago. That is, as in the third quarter of 2022, seven out of ten (70.69%) of those requested were agreed.

70,172 CRIMINAL MATTERS

Likewise, the report shows that violence against women courts held a total of 1,619 trials on minor crimes between July and September of this year, a figure practically identical to that of the same period in 2022 (1,625). Of them, 795 (49% of the total) were for immediate prosecution. Of the total minor crimes prosecuted in the quarter, 33% were insults and 38% were unjust humiliations.

These judicial bodies filed 70,172 criminal cases throughout the first quarter of the year, with 64.4% of the crimes investigated involving injuries and mistreatment provided for in articles 153 and 173 of the Penal Code.

In Criminal matters, which prosecute crimes punishable by up to five years in prison, these courts received 7,243 cases in the quarter analyzed and resolved 5,884. The number of sentences handed down by these bodies was 5,666, of which 3,911 (69.03%) were convictions.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Courts, which prosecute the most serious crimes, punishable by custodial sentences of more than five years, handed down 61 sentences, of which 50 (81.97%) were convictions.

Finally, the juvenile courts prosecuted 55 minors for crimes of violence against women, the same number as a year ago. Measures were imposed in 51 cases, of which 48 related to Spanish minors. In the other 4 procedures, all of them carried out against minors of Spanish nationality, no measures were imposed.

BALEARIC ISLANDS, WITH THE HIGHEST RATE, AND GALICIA, THE LOWEST

By community, the Balearic Islands have registered the highest rate of victims of gender violence in the third quarter of 2023, with a ratio of 36.8 victims per 10,000 women, followed by Murcia, with 32.3; Valencian Community, with 29.7; Canary Islands, with 26.6; Andalusia, with 23.5; Navarra, with 22.4; and Extremadura, with 21.6.

For its part, the rates lower than the national average were recorded in Galicia, with 13.3; Castilla y León, with 13.9; Basque Country, with 15; La Rioja, with 15.2; Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia, with 17.1; Asturias, with 17.2; Cantabria, with 20.6; Madrid, with 21; and Aragón, with 21.2.
