Tusk speaks of a "new era of war" in Europe and advocates "a common defense" of the EU's borders

BERLIN, March 29 (DPA/EP) -

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has assured that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has marked the entry into "a new era of war in Europe" and has emphasized the need for joint defense of the borders of the European Union.

"I know it sounds devastating, especially for the new generations, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the antebellum era," Tusk said. "I'm not exaggerating. This is becoming clearer every day," he added in statements to the German newspaper 'Die Welt'.

The Polish president has asserted that his objective with these words is not to "scare anyone", but he has warned that "war is no longer a concept of the past", but rather "it is real and it started more than two years ago".

In this regard, Tusk has expressed his concern given that Europe "has not seen a situation like this since 1945", the year in which the Second World War came to an end.

However, he has been optimistic about what he has described as "a revolution in the European mentality", which has led, among other things, to a scenario in which "no one questioned the need for a common defense anymore."

"The European Union as a whole, as a powerful organization, must be prepared to fight for the security of our borders and our territory," said Tusk in this regard, advocating for a more coherent protection of the EU's external borders in the face of instrumentalization of migrants by Russia.
