Thousands of people in Madrid ask for an end to the war in Ukraine on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion

MADRID, 24 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Thousands of people attended the demonstration this Saturday in Madrid for the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to demonstrate their support for the Ukrainian people and to call for an end to the armed conflict started by Russia in 2022.

The protest was called at 5:00 p.m. by groups supporting Ukraine in Madrid's Plaza de España and marched to Puerta del Sol. A crowd of protesters attended, waving flags of Ukraine and Spain, carrying banners demanding peace and thanking the aid received by Europe in these two years since the invasion.

"Get out of Ukraine, Putin murderer"; "Today Ukraine, tomorrow Europe"; "Europe listens, this is your fight," were some of the proclamations that the Protestants expressed during the march, while carrying signs with slogans such as "Peace", "Stop Putin" or "Enough!".

Among the authorities who attended the march was the Ukrainian ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, who thanked the government and the Spanish people for the help given to his country since 2022, although he insisted on the importance of obtaining more war material "to be able to resist."

"We have to receive more military material to be able to resist, to carry out counteroffensive operations because it is very important to obtain this material from our friendly countries, partner countries. Spain supports us a lot," said Pohoreltsev, highlighting that the Spanish territory lives almost 190,000 more Ukrainians than before the war started.

In this sense, the ambassador has reiterated his gratitude to Spain for ending its presidency of the EU Council by opening the doors for Ukraine to begin negotiations to integrate into the Union. He has also welcomed the fact that Spain was one of the "first countries in Europe" to introduce temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees.
