The prosecutor who opposed investigating Puigdemont for terrorism leaves the association after not receiving protection

He says that "it makes no sense" to continue in an association that is "incapable" of protecting his "professional actions"

MADRID, 25 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The prosecutor of the Supreme Court Álvaro Redondo, who issued a report in which he opposed the high court investigating the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont for terrorism, has withdrawn from the Association of Prosecutors after it ruled out protecting him as a result of a press article against him.

In a letter addressed to the president of the association, Cristina Dexeus, Redondo assures "that it makes no sense" for him to remain in an association to which he has belonged for 20 years and that "it appears absolutely incapable" of giving him protection in his "professional actions." ". "I beg you to process, as soon as possible and with immediate effect, my definitive and irrevocable withdrawal from the association," states the letter, collected by Europa Press.

In it, Redondo recalls that the Fiscal Council agreed on March 6 to protect him "against the publication in some media of extremely critical articles" about his decision to oppose investigating Puigdemont for terrorism in relation to the independence platform 'Tsunami. Democratic'.

"The Council granted the protection, although the members belonging to the Association of Prosecutors voted against taking it into consideration," laments the prosecutor, ensuring that "with their inconceivable and overwhelming attitude they distanced themselves from the counselors of the other two associations, as well as the State Attorney General, the Lieutenant Prosecutor and the Inspector Prosecutor".

In his opinion, the Association of Prosecutors "made it clear" that it was not fulfilling one of its most important purposes, that of defending members in their professional performance.

It is worth remembering that on February 6, at the meeting of prosecutors of the first criminal section of the Supreme Court, the two presidents of said section showed opposing positions regarding the report prepared by Redondo. Fidel Cadena was against, while Joaquín Sánchez-Covisa was in favor. This discrepancy between both bosses led the lieutenant prosecutor of the Supreme Court, María Ángeles Sánchez-Conde, as hierarchical superior, to speak out.

Finally, Sánchez-Conde issued the final report with the position of the Prosecutor's Office: he opposed Puigdemont being investigated in the Supreme Court for terrorism, considering that there is not sufficient evidence of criminality against the Junts MEP.

Last February 29, the Supreme Court -- against the criteria of the Public Ministry -- opened criminal proceedings against Puigdemont and the ERC deputy in the Parliament Ruben Wagensberg for alleged crimes of terrorism in the cause of 'Democratic Tsunami'.
