MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The period to vote by mail in the general elections of July 23 ends this Friday at 2:00 p.m., after the decision of the Central Electoral Board (JEC) to attend to the request of the Post Office and give a few more hours of margin to be able to deposit the postal vote.

During the meeting held this Thursday in Congress, the arbitration body studied the reports issued by Correos to justify its request. According to the agreement of the JEC, although "all the electoral documentation has already been delivered", last Tuesday 9.07% of the shipments made were still pending collection by the voters.

For these elections, which are going to take place in the middle of the summer holidays, the record for postal vote requests has been broken. Specifically, there were 2,622,808 people who requested it.

More than 90% have already voted but until two days ago there were still more than 237,000 people who, although they had been notified that their documentation was at their post office, had not yet picked it up and therefore had not been able to vote. Correos reduced the number of pending collections this Thursday to 170,000. In other words, between Tuesday and Wednesday some 67,000 were delivered.

In addition, the JEC took into account to extend the term that there has been "a significant number of reissues of shipments of electoral documentation." Specifically, the documentation of those people who initially indicated an address to receive the documentation and then asked that it be sent to a different one has had to be reissued.

Thus, according to the agreement collected by Europa Press, the arbitration body, "in order to facilitate as much as possible the right to vote for citizens who have opted for this voting procedure", agreed to extend the deadline for delivery by voters of the voting envelopes at the Post Office until Friday at 2:00 p.m., a day and a half before the voting begins at the polling stations.

To this end, the JEC asked the Post Office to be extremely diligent "to ensure that the envelopes with the vote can be delivered on the day of the vote at the respective polling stations, within the legally established deadlines."

PP AND VOX COMPLAINTED DELAYS

The JEC decided to send the reports in which Correos put forward its arguments in favor of extending this term to the political parties interested in extending this term. Specifically, it was the PP and Vox that denounced the delays in the delivery of electoral documentation to these voters and requested that more margin be given to be able to exercise this modality of voting.
