The King will attend the inauguration of Milei on Sunday accompanied by the secretary for Latin America

MADRID, 7 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

This Sunday, King Felipe VI will attend the inauguration of the ultra-liberal Javier Milei as the new president of Argentina accompanied by the Secretary of State for Latin America, Juan Fernández Trigo, as diplomatic sources have confirmed to Europa Press.

Don Felipe has traditionally been the one who has represented Spain in this type of events since 1996, first as Prince of Asturias and then as King. This year he was already present on January 1 at the inauguration of Luiz Inazio Lula da Silva in Brazil and in August he went to Paraguay for Santiago Peña's inauguration.

The King always travels accompanied by a member of the Government, as a general rule the Minister of Foreign Affairs, but in the past there have been other occasions in which it has been the person responsible for Ibero-America in the Ministry who has done so, the last time precisely last August.

On this occasion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has to chair the last European Foreign Council of the Spanish Presidency on Monday in Brussels.

The monarch will travel to Buenos Aires on Saturday where he is expected to hold meetings with the outgoing president, Alberto Fernández, and with the incoming one, as usually happens in this type of travel.

Don Felipe will meet in the Argentine capital with several leaders from the region who have confirmed their attendance, including the presidents of Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, as well as the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, who maintains a close relationship with Milei and has been invited by this.

The fact that the Executive had not expressly congratulated the ultraliberal candidate for his victory in the second round against the Peronist candidate, Sergio Massa, to whom the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, gave his support, had generated speculation about whether the King would attend his inauguration.

After Milei was elected president on November 19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement in which it wished Argentines "success" in the "new stage" that begins after having spoken out "democratically."

"Spain will continue to promote the relationship with Argentina in favor of the well-being and prosperity of our people, both bilaterally and in the Ibero-American and multilateral spheres," the department headed by Albares indicated then.

In this sense, he defended that the shared interests between the two countries and "the intense historical relationship between both societies must be the basis of the agenda between both governments on which Spain intends to continue working."
