Russian blogger Sofia Sapega agrees to be extradited to Russia after her conviction in Belarus

MADRID, 12 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian blogger Sofia Sapega, girlfriend of one of the main Belarusian opponents, Roman Protasevich, has agreed on Wednesday to be extradited to Russia after being sentenced to six years in prison in Belarus for inciting hatred.

The Russian Embassy in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, has indicated that the authorities of both countries are working to "solve the formalities" to make their transfer effective, according to information collected by the Interfax news agency.

"On Monday, our consul visited Sapega. During the meeting with the Russian citizen, she agreed to be extradited to Russia to serve the rest of her sentence here," the Russian Embassy said in a statement.

The diplomatic legation has also indicated that "the next step, which includes details on the extradition process, will be taken soon by the Russian authorities", who will evaluate the state of health of the citizen.

The Embassy has confirmed that Russian diplomats are still in contact with the Belarusian side to address the case, so they are also in contact with their families and lawyers.
