Polish Parliament elects Donald Tusk as new Prime Minister

The Polish Parliament elected this Monday the leader of the opposition, Donald Tusk, who leads Civic Platform, as the new prime minister after the investiture of the ultra-conservative Mateusz Morawiecki failed due to lack of support.

"This is a truly wonderful day, not only for me, but for all those who for many years have believed that things could improve," said Tusk after the vote, which resulted in 248 votes in favor compared to 201 votes. against, as reported by the PAP news agency.

This comes after Morawiecki failed in his attempt to gain the confidence of the House after a vote in which he received only 190 votes in favor against 266 votes against. He was designated as a candidate to form a government by the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, without having the necessary support.

Civic Platform won 157 deputies in the last elections who, added to the 65 from Third Way and the 26 from La Izquierda, have finally managed to unseat Morawiecki and his ultra-conservative policies, ending the eight-year leadership of the ruling Law and Justice (Pee).

Among the objectives of the coalition led by Tusk is to unlock the funds that Brussels keeps withheld due to doubts regarding respect for the rule of law, as well as the incorporation of Poland into the European Public Prosecutor's Office.

During the debate, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski accused the Polish opponent of being a "German agent", which caused an uproar in the Chamber. Kaczynski already criticized Tusk during the election campaign - and even in previous years - for his closeness to the policies promoted by Berlin.

For her part, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has stressed on the aforementioned social network that she hopes to work with Tusk, who is a "firm believer" in the European Union, "for a prosperous Poland and a stronger Europe."

Likewise, the Economic Vice President and Head of Trade of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, hopes that "his strong leadership and commitment will make a valuable contribution not only to the EU, but also to Ukraine."
