Islamic State confirms the death of its leader in clashes with Turkish factions in Idlib (Syria)

MADRID, 3 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Islamic State jihadist group has confirmed the death of its leader, Abu al Hussein al Husseini al Qurashi, in clashes with Turkish factions in Idlib, in northern Syria, and has named Abu Hafs al Hashimi al Quraishi as his successor.

The information has been revealed by the spokesman for the Islamic State, Abu Hudhaifa al Ansari, through an undated audio broadcast by a channel affiliated with the terrorist group on Telegram, as reported by the Shaam news portal on Thursday.

In the aforementioned message, the spokesman for the jihadist group has also reported that Ankara-affiliated factions arrested its former spokesman, Abu Omar al-Muhajir, although the details of his whereabouts are unknown.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan already reported in statements collected by Turkish television TRT at the end of April that the Turkish secret services had eliminated the leader of the terrorist group during an operation carried out in Syrian territory.

On November 30, the United States announced the death of Abu al-Husein al-Huseini al-Quraishi's predecessor, Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Quraishi in Syria in an operation by the Free Syrian Army, a pro-Turkish Syrian militia. This first Al Quraishi was the brother of the group's historic leader, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, who died in Syria in 2019.
