Guterres arrives in Egypt to ask for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza from the Rafah crossing

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, arrived in Egypt this Saturday at the beginning of a visit that will take him to the Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip, where he will once again ask for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Palestinian enclave.

Guterres will be accompanied on this tour by the head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, and the Egyptian Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.

The United Nations secretary will inspect the slow process of humanitarian assistance by land to the Gaza Strip at the Rafah crossing after its humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, yesterday accused Israel of the paralysis in aid deliveries.

For now, Guterres has gone to the General Hospital in the town of El Arish, the capital of the Egyptian governorate of North Sinai, to inspect the health status of the wounded in the Gaza Strip, who are receiving treatment in Egyptian hospitals.

This same Saturday, the governor of the region of the Egyptian province of North Sinai, General Mohamed Shusha, highlighted that there are some 7,000 trucks in the area waiting to receive authorization to enter the Gaza Strip.

Shusha, who accompanies Guterres on his visit, has pointed out that the inspections that Israel imposes are the reason for the delays in the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave, according to an official statement from the provincial government. The Egyptian official has also highlighted Egypt's "great efforts" to stop "Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip."

Guterres, for his part, has insisted on the need for a ceasefire and for trucks on the Egyptian side of the border to be able to enter the area "as soon as possible," according to the Egyptian statement, published on Facebook.
