Germany will try to reconvert its gas infrastructure to hydrogen transport

MADRID, 12 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Germany will try to reconvert existing gas infrastructures over the next few years so that they can transport hydrogen, as explained by the general director of the transmission systems operator FNB, Barbara Fischer.

"The goal is to convert as much as possible and not build anything new," Fischer summed up in statements to the 'Dpa' agency. Fischer stated this Wednesday that more than half of the pipes through which hydrogen will circulate in the future serve gas today.

In this way, according to current plans, the transmission network will include a series of pipelines 11,200 kilometers long and, according to Fischer, includes connections between the south and the north of the country, as well as between the east and the west.

At first, the connection between the hydrogen infrastructures themselves will be prioritized, which will use renewable energy to obtain it to be considered 'green'. The first phase is expected to come into operation in 2032 with prior authorization from the Federal Network Agency.

The second phase will address the complete implementation of the network and will be covered by the next energy industry law. The purpose of the plan is to deepen the ecological transition and provide the German industry with 'green' hydrogen to stop depending on gas.
