UK triples its climate funding to tackle global warming

Sunak urges to "maintain the commitments made" in Glasgow during COP26

The Government of the United Kingdom announced this Monday a new package of measures that includes an increase in financing up to three times higher than that established so far to deal with climate change.

The British authorities, who have transferred throughout the day the Presidency of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), have indicated in a statement that the funds allocated to climate adaptation will exceed 500 million pounds (573 million euros) in 2019 to 1,500 million (about 1,700 million euros) by 2025.

The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, wanted to show that London intends to "cement the legacy of the United Kingdom with a series of announcements on energy and climate", while advocating preserving forests and nature.

In this sense, he highlighted the need to "recognize the existence threat posed by climate change throughout the world", from the "catastrophic floods in Pakistan to the severe droughts in Somalia".

The text also shows the British Government's commitment to forests and includes the implementation of the Alliance of Leaders for Forests and Climate to protect some of the most diverse natural habitats in the world, especially in Africa and Latin America.

"We are focused on partnering with the private sector to facilitate green innovation and the energy transition in our country and around the world," he said.

He also indicated that more than 65 million pounds (74 million euros) are expected to be invested in a clean energy project, which will make it possible to offer scholarships to researchers and scientists from developing countries.

Sunak thus requested during his statements at the start of the COP27 in Egypt that "the commitments reached in Glasgow be maintained in order to face climate change and turn the fight against rising temperatures into a global mission".

"This way we can leave our children a greener planet and a more prosperous future. That would be a legacy to be proud of," he asserted.
