Two German NGOs rescue more than 60 migrants in the central Mediterranean during the last hours

ROME, 17 Dic. (DPA/EP) -

The German humanitarian organizations Sea-Eye and Mission Lifeline have reported this Saturday the rescue of more than 60 migrants during the last hours in the waters of the central Mediterranean.

The rescued people had spent a day and a half in a rubber boat not suitable for sailing. After their identification, the respective crews of the 'Sea-Eye 4' and the 'Rise Above', ended up participating out on Friday night in a joint operation to get people out of the water.

Among those rescued were twelve unaccompanied minors, according to Sea-Eye.

Migrants often leave North Africa on unseaworthy vessels to reach a European Union (EU) country by sea.

The journey is risky, especially in winter, due to the danger of bad weather and harsh sea conditions.

Most of them arrive in Italy, where, according to the Ministry of the Interior, more than 98,700 migrants have arrived by boat so far in 2022, a significantly higher number than in the same period last year (about 63,400).

Boats frequently capsize and their passengers drown. According to UN figures, more than 1,360 people have died or disappeared in the central Mediterranean so far this year.
