The United States urges Peru to prosecute and prosecute those responsible for the violence in the protests

MADRID, 2 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States has urged the Government of Peru to "continue to take measures" to hold those responsible for the violent acts in the protests that are taking place throughout the country to account.

This was expressed by the US Undersecretary of State, Wendy Sherman, to the Peruvian Foreign Minister, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, to whom she has shown her support to protect stability and Human Rights in Peru.

"Under Secretary Sherman expressed the United States' support for Peru and for (Peruvian) President Dina Boluarte and their efforts to affirm Peru's democracy, ensuring peace, stability, and unity for the Peruvian people," the statement read. Released by the State Department.

Thus, the United States has shown itself committed to helping Peru strengthen its democratic institutions and to working with the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and other regional partners.

Peru is submerged in a deep political crisis born after the dismissal by Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced on December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.

After the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people have come out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent call for presidential elections. Since then, more than 60 people have lost their lives in riots between protesters and security forces.
