The snow storm causes several deaths and blackouts in eastern Europe

BRATISLAVA, 22 Ene. (DPA/EP) -

An intense snowfall has caused several deaths, blackouts and transport chaos in countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland or Slovakia.

In Hertvíkovice, Czech Republic, a driver has died from the impact of a tree that fell on his car while traveling on a rural road, according to the Czech news agency CTK.

Meanwhile, in Wawrzka, southeast of Krakow, Poland, a 70-year-old woman has died due to a lack of electricity to her oxygen machine, the Polish news agency PAP has reported. The woman's relatives alerted the health services and the fire brigade, but the fire truck carrying the oxygen cylinder had an accident on the road due to the storm.

A fatal weather-related accident has also been reported in Prague, the Czech capital, CTK reports.

Poland has reported more than 100,000 homes without electricity, according to PAP. In most cases the cuts are due to trees falling on power lines.

There have also been blackouts in Slovakia, with thousands of homes without power due to bad weather. The Police have reported numerous traffic accidents also linked to the storm.
