The president of the German Parliament proposes to extend the legislatures to five years

BERLIN, 22 Dec. (DPA/EP) -

The president of the Lower House of the German Parliament (Bundestag), the social democrat, Barbel Bas, of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has proposed extending the term of the legislatures from four to five years, which would also imply delaying the holding of elections.

He considers that this extended legislature "would be good for the Bundestag", which in this way would adopt the times that are already applied in the majority of regional parliaments. "Perhaps one or two elections can be combined," he explained in statements to the DPA agency.

The last legislative elections took place in September 2021 and a new majority led by the SDP emerged, which governs in coalition with the Greens and Liberals.

On the other hand, Bas has described as "incomprehensible" that the minimum age of 16 years to exercise the right to vote is not applied at the federal level, despite the fact that it is applied in many local and regional elections. In this sense, he has pointed out that early participation in this type of process favors the continued voting in the future.
