The OAS calls for "respect for stability" in Ecuador after the request for a political trial against Lasso

MADRID, 6 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Organization of American States (OAS) has requested this Sunday "respect for the stability of the constitutional periods" in Ecuador, after the National Assembly has recommended politically prosecuting the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso.

"The General Secretariat expresses the absolute importance of adherence to democratic institutions and respect for the stability of constitutional periods," reads a statement in which the OAS has maintained that it is "following the latest events" that have taken place in the Latin American country.

Thus, the agency has urged political and social actors to "frame the resolution of their differences in the constitutional context," while reiterating the entity's willingness to cooperate with Quito.

Lasso thanked the OAS for its statement "in unrestricted support for respect for democracy and political and institutional stability." "Ecuadorians want stability to prosper," added the president.

The National Assembly of Ecuador, with 104 votes in favor and 18 against, approved this Saturday the report of the occasional commission that recommends opening a political trial against Lasso for alleged acts of corruption that dot him.
