Former Defense Minister Walter Ayala assumes the legal defense of the former president

MADRID, 2 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Supreme Court of Peru has denied the appeal presented by the legal defense of former President Pedro Castillo with which he sought to annul the investigation against him for the alleged commission of the crime of rebellion and for which he is in preventive detention.

The question presented by the former president's lawyers indicated that the Peruvian Congress did not follow a "regular" conduct because its defense would have been violated, as reported by 'La República'.

The decision takes place after a hearing was held on January 17 to review the issue presented by the former president, where Castillo was able to intervene for a moment.

"My right to defense and evidence was violated by this Congress of the Republic (...) Why would I have to leave the country? Where is the proof that I want to leave? I have not raped, stolen, or killed nobody. I never had the idea of leaving this country," ex-president stressed at the hearing.

The Peruvian Judiciary has explained its refusal by assuring that the Andean Parliament followed the process of the political impeachment process provided for in articles 99 and 100 of the Peruvian Constitution, according to the aforementioned media.

Former Defense Minister Walter Ayala has assumed the defense of former President Pedro Castillo, who is serving preventive detention for 18 months in the Barbadillo prison, on the outskirts of Lima.

In this way, Ayala has become the thirteenth lawyer for the former president since he announced the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of an emergency government on December 7.

"I am defending President Castillo directly and I do not coordinate with any other lawyer, but directly with him. I come to defend the issue of due process in parliament. I do not come to seek the freedom of Mr. Castillo, but to declare himself null and void the legislative resolution (of the motion of censure filed against him for moral incapacity) for having violated due process," he stressed on Monday to the Exitosa radio station.
