The Italian Coast Guard rescues more than 200 migrants off Lampedusa

MADRID, 3 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Italian Coast Guard has rescued 211 migrants and refugees off the coast of Lampedusa who were trying to reach southern Europe in a fishing boat that was already "in danger" in an area with bad weather conditions.

The coast guard located this vessel about 15 miles from the island of Lampedusa. According to the institution itself, it was a "particularly complex" operation, since the bad weather was compounded by the fact that water had already begun to enter the ship.

Along with the migrants, a person identified as a trafficker was also transferred to the port and has been made available to the Police.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior has denounced a rebound in migrant arrivals, with more than 14,000 so far this year. The Coast Guard has estimated the number of people it has rescued at about 9,000 since January 1.

The central Mediterranean is a particularly busy migratory route to reach Europe and accumulates at least 284 fatalities this year, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The deadliest shipwreck took place last weekend, off the coast of Calabria, and has accumulated 68 victims until this Friday. In addition, there are dozens of missing people who are still being searched for by the emergency services.
