Russia delivers a note of protest to the Latvian ambassador over the removal of Soviet monuments

MADRID, 10 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Russian authorities have summoned the Latvian ambassador to the country, Maris Riekstins, on Thursday to deliver a note of protest against what Moscow considers "illegal actions" related to the removal of monuments dating back to the Soviet era.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement that it has transferred its "strong protest" to the head of the Latvian diplomatic mission in the country for the "vandalism" in which the Government has incurred when dismantling the monuments.

In a statement, he accused the Latvian government of generating "obstacles" to hinder the work of Russian cultural centers in Riga, the country's capital, while trying to "expropriate" Russian properties in the territory.

"It has been stressed that all responsibility for these acts rests solely with the Latvian side. We reserve the right to take action in response to these decisions," the ministry said.
