Orbán proposes to replace the European Parliament with a "new" parliament of "national delegates"

MADRID, 22 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has proposed eliminating the European Parliament after the corruption "scandal" over alleged bribes from Qatar and has proposed a "new" Parliament that would be made up of "national delegates" from different countries.

"Let's return control to the member states," said Orbán on Twitter, who in recent weeks has taken advantage of the alleged corrupt plot to charge against an institution that on several occasions has made Hungary ugly for its anti-democratic drift.

For the Hungarian leader, the scandal is "revealing". "Safeguards against corruption have failed miserably. If we want to restore public confidence, it is time to abolish the European Parliament," he added.

Orbán, who 'a priori' wants to give each government more power, has defended that with his "solution" there will be "greater supervision, accountability and credibility" in the European institution.
