Most Finns are in favor of joining NATO without Sweden, according to a survey

MADRID, 2 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The majority of Finnish citizens are in favor of following the path of NATO membership without waiting for Sweden, whose aspirations remain blocked by Turkey's veto, according to a survey published on Thursday.

The poll, prepared by the firm Taloustutkimus for the newspaper 'Ilta-Sanomie', shows that 53 percent of the people surveyed are in favor of going it alone and breaking the alliance that the two Nordic countries sealed by requesting their incorporation at the same time in the Atlantic Alliance.

Twenty-eight percent are still in favor of maintaining a common front, while the remaining 19 percent have no opinion or no answer, according to the study, which has a margin of error of three percentage points.

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has made it clear on several occasions that he is not considering completing the process of ratifying Sweden's accession for now, among other reasons because his authorities allegedly "allow" the burning of copies of the Koran in demonstrations. Erdogan, however, has released Finland from the veto.

The Finnish Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto, suggested last week the possibility of studying a possible break with the bloc, although in a matter of hours he qualified his statements and the Government of Sanna Marin has warned that it continues to work to join the Alliance at the same time. time than Sweden.
