Iran announces new sanctions against the European Union and the United Kingdom in retaliation for similar measures

MADRID, 22 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday new sanctions against 23 individuals and 13 companies from the European Union and the United Kingdom for "instigating terrorist acts", "spreading false information" about the Iranian authorities and for imposing "cruel sanctions".

The Iranian diplomatic office has condemned the participation of Brussels and London in "the intensification of cruel sanctions", since, according to Tehran, it constitutes "an evident violation of the fundamental principles of International Law enunciated in the Charter of the United Nations". .

"For supporting terrorism and terrorist groups, instigating and encouraging terrorist acts and violence against the Iranian people, interfering in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, fomenting violence and unrest in Iran, spreading false information about Iran and participate in the escalation of cruel sanctions against the Iranian people as economic terrorism," the letter justifies.

For this reason, Tehran has blocked the accounts and transactions of the indicated persons and companies in the banking system, as well as the prohibition of the issuance of visas and entry into the territory.

The EU on Monday extended sanctions against Iran to 32 individuals and two entities implicated in the internal repression following protests over the death in custody of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil improperly.

Among those sanctioned in the fifth batch of EU measures are the Ministers of Culture and Education, Mohamed Esmaeili and Yusef Nuri, respectively, as well as senior officials from the Revolutionary Guard, the Ministry of Intelligence and the judicial apparatus.
