Hamas considers that the declaration of the Security Council of the UN shows the "international fragility"

MADRID, 21 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has indicated that the United Nations Security Council statement on the latest Israeli government decision to recognize new settlements in the West Bank demonstrates the "fragility and weakness of the international position on the crimes of the occupation and their continued settlement policies".

This declaration by the highest body of the United Nations is merely symbolic and is not binding as a resolution would be, and it occurs after a tacit agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinian Authority mediated by Washington.

The movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, has deplored the decision to issue a statement instead of a resolution condemning the crimes: "We will consider it an evasion of the Council by assuming the responsibilities entrusted to it in accordance with international conventions and norms. ", according to a statement collected by 'Felesteen'.

Hamas considers that this measure by the United Nations "serves as a green light for the continuation of the occupation", as well as "its violations and crimes".

Likewise, he has called on the international community and the Security Council to take dissuasive measures against Israel's policies, arguing that "denouncement and concern" is not enough.

The Security Council of the United Nations expressed this Monday "concern" and condemned the latest decision of the Government of Israel that recognizes nine settlements in the West Bank in retaliation for the recent attacks in the region.

The Security Council statement has reiterated that continuing the settlement policy in the West Bank represents "a dangerous deterioration in the viability of the two-state solution along the 1967 lines."

Likewise, it has focused on "all acts of violence" against civilians, including "acts of terrorism." "The Security Council calls on the parties to remain calm," he added in the statement.

The West Bank --including East Jerusalem-- and the Gaza Strip --from which Israel withdrew in 2005-- were militarily occupied by Israel in the 1967 war along with the Golan Heights --in dispute with Syria--.

In total, some 700,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, some of them in colonies considered legal by Israel and some in settlements considered illegal even by the Israeli government. International Law considers the colonization of militarily occupied territories a war crime.
