Guterres condemns the assault on Brazil's democratic institutions

MADRID, 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned this Sunday the riots registered in various buildings of Brazilian institutions by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

"I condemn today's assault on Brazil's democratic institutions. The will of the Brazilian people and the country's institutions must be respected," Guterres said.

"I have full confidence that this will be the case. Brazil is a great democratic country," added the Secretary General, in a message posted on his Twitter profile in both English and Brazilian.

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters have stormed the headquarters of Congress, the Presidency and the Supreme Court during this day, calling for military intervention and the deposition of the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose legitimacy they do not recognize.

The Brazilian president has signed a decree for the federal government to assume security powers in the district of Brasilia, before condemning the violence that is "unprecedented", in what was his first public appearance after the incidents.

"It has never been done in the history of this country," he lamented during a speech in which he recalled his own electoral defeats and the historical position of the left. Democracy, he added, guarantees freedom of expression, "but it also demands respect for the institutions."

Bolsonaro, for his part, has denied after several hours of silence his responsibilities in the assault and has pointed to Lula for having "accused him without evidence."
