Germany approves export to Ukraine of Leopard 1 main battle tanks

BERLIN, 3 Feb. (DPA/EP) -

The German Government has granted a license to export Leopard 1 battle tanks to Ukraine, as confirmed this Friday by the Executive spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, after the authorities announced that they would deliver Leopard 2 tanks to kyiv to deal with the Russian invasion.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed in late January that Berlin will send Leopard 2 main battle tanks to kyiv to bolster the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, after days of speculation about the position that Berlin would ultimately adopt. After that, the German Executive explained that it will deliver fourteen Leopard 2A6s that are in the arsenal of the German Armed Forces.

The go-ahead from Berlin also includes authorizations for other countries, such as Poland, to send the German-made tanks they have, amid requests from the Ukrainian government for the delivery of advanced weapons to deal with the Russian forces, which have intensified their offensives in the Donbas region (east) in recent weeks.
