Deaths in Chile fires rise to 25 after death of forestry worker

MADRID, 15 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Chile has confirmed this Tuesday the death of a forestry worker who was helping in the extinction operations of the fires that are ravaging the south of Chile, thus raising the total number of deaths since they started to 25.

The Chilean Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, has reported that during the day on Monday the forestry worker lost his life after a tree fell on him, as reported by 'Bio Bio Chile'.

"Félix Pérez Pereira was a worker for a private forestry company, who died in an accident yesterday as a result of a tree that collapsed while he was building firebreaks," Tohá added in statements to the press.

With the death of the worker, the number of people killed by the fires registered in different parts of the country, spread over the regions of Ñuble, Biobío and La Araucanía, has risen to 25.

Likewise, the Chilean authorities have proceeded to arrest 38 people, including five minors and 33 adults, for their alleged involvement in the forest fires, which have already burned more than 425,000 hectares.
