Customs staff at British airports join the Christmas strike

MADRID, 8 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The customs staff union at several UK airports will go on strike for eight days over the Christmas holidays.

These stoppages affect a total of 1,000 passport control staff, as well as other officials at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Birmingham airports.

The leader of the PCS union, Mark Serwotka, has indicated that the strikes "would intensify" unless the government "puts money on the table now", according to the BBC.

In this sense, Serwotka has assured that the workers "have no other option" other than to strike: "Currently they skip meals, they cannot turn on the heating at home, due to the poverty in which they live."

In addition, it has specified that there have been talks with the Government so that a salary increase of 2 percent takes place. "They keep saying that their door is open, but it is a very strange door because there is nothing behind it," she said.
