Bolsonaro tried to introduce three million euros in jewelry from Saudi Arabia to Brazil without declaring, according to media

MADRID, 4 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro would have tried to introduce into Brazil jewelry gifted by Saudi Arabia, with a value of 16.5 million Brazilian reais (almost 3 million euros) without having previously declared it and without paying the corresponding taxes, as reported in exclusive to the Brazilian newspaper 'O Estado de Sao Paulo'.

The former president received a multitude of jewels from the Saudi authorities, among which "a necklace, a ring, a watch and a pair of diamond earrings" stand out, in October 2021, as a gift for the then first lady Michelle Bolsonaro , but the goods were seized at the international airport of Guarulhos, in Sao Paulo.

The agents found the jewelry in the backpack of one of the soldiers who was traveling back to Brazil, and verified that none of the objects had been previously declared upon passing through customs, as required by law. Former Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque tried to recover the jewels without success on numerous occasions.

The Brazilian newspaper affirms that, in the last two months of Bolsonaro's term, four attempts were made to recover the gifts, mobilizing even the Foreign and Economy ministries, all of which failed.

The only way to recover the jewels would be to pay the mandatory import tax, 50 percent of the value of the item in question, and a fine of 25 percent of the value, for not having declared it from the beginning. The other option would be to declare them an "official gift to the President of the Republic and the First Lady", but the newspaper explains that in this way they would belong to the State of Brazil, not to the Bolsonaros.

The current minister of the Presidency's Communication Secretariat, Paulo Pimenta, has spoken harshly on the subject on his Twitter account: "The report by ('O Estado de Sao Paulo') reveals horrifying details about how the scheme of bribes, gifts and illegal advantages of Bolsonaro, his relatives and close advisers. They all deserve to be investigated and punished for the crimes committed."

He has also described the attempts of former minister Albuquerque to recover the jewels as something "shameful and that shows the lack of ethics of those who held positions in the Government."
