At least 16 people have lost their lives and seven have been injured after a landslide in a camp in the city of Batang Kali, in the Selangor province of Malaysia.

Around 3:00 a.m. (local time), the Malaysian emergency services received a notice of a landslide, after which several teams from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Corps attended, as reported by 'New Straits Times' .

Once there, the firefighters have found the lifeless bodies of 16 people, while they have managed to rescue another 53. Of the total number of people released, seven have been injured and have been taken to nearby hospitals to receive medical attention.

"Fifty-three victims escaped the landslide unharmed, while seven were injured. Eight victims died. Search and rescue operation is ongoing," Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency has detailed on Twitter.

In this sense, the search and rescue efforts continue while 17 people are trapped at the scene of the incident, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

Previously, the Police have confirmed that one of the victims was a minor, although the exact age has not been disclosed. Likewise, the security forces have detailed that they estimate that the height of the landslide was 30 meters.
