The Supreme Court lowers the prison sentences for the nine convicted of the 'Osasuna case'

The court imposes penalties of between 10 months and 5 years and 7 months in prison

MADRID, 19 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Supreme Court has reduced the prison sentences imposed on the nine convicted of the so-called 'Osasuna case', in which it was considered proven that members of the Board of Directors of Club Atlético Osasuna agreed to give priority to former Betis players Antonio Amaya and Xavi Torres to "alter the results of sports competition". It has imposed sentences of between 10 months and 5 years and 7 months in prison.

In a sentence, to which Europa Press has had access, the magistrates have partially upheld the appeal of the defenses that asked to acquit the convicted. The court has agreed to maintain the penalties for the crime of aggravated misappropriation imposed by the High Court of Navarra, although it slightly reduces those corresponding to the penalties for the crime of forgery -- by establishing that those convicted of this crime can only be punished for a crime and not for two in competition as the Court appreciated-- and for sports corruption, as well as the corresponding fines.

The Supreme Court's decision comes after last November the Prosecutor's Office asked the court to uphold the sentences, considering it proven that members of the club's board of directors agreed to give priority to two Betis players to "alter the results of the sports competition."

In the public hearing, which was chaired by magistrate Julián Sánchez Melgar, the defenses ruled against the sentence that handed down sentences that ranged from 8 years to 8 months in prison and one year in prison for crimes of misappropriation, falsehood in commercial document, false accounting and sports corruption. The accusations made by Club Atlético Osasuna and LaLiga coincided with the criteria of the Prosecutor's Office and asked the Supreme Court to maintain the sentences.
