Zelensky acknowledges that a fifth of Ukraine's territory is under Russian rule

Kyiv, 2 June (DPA / EP) -

Ukraine's president, Volodimir Zelensky, has acknowledged that around a fifth of the country's territory is under Russian rule now that the 100 days since the start of the war are approaching.

"As of today, 20 percent of our territory is under the control of the occupiers," Zelenski reported during a videoconference intervention before the Luxembourg Parliament.

This percentage represents about 125,000 square kilometres, a territory "more than the entire Benelux", as Zelensky has stressed in reference to the territory occupied by Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian president has reported that the battle front today extends over a line of more than a thousand kilometers. So far, Russian troops have occupied some 3,260 towns, of which more than a thousand are already under Ukrainian rule again.

Regarding the figures of internally displaced persons, Zelenski has raised the number of Ukrainians who move through Ukrainian territory to twelve million, while another five million have been forced to flee abroad.

According to Zelenski, to date, Russia has registered more than 30,000 casualties in its Army, figures that, however, are questioned by Western military experts.

"We have stopped, and even on occasion managed to push back, an invasion army that was once considered the second strongest in the world," the Ukrainian president has settled.
