Zelenski maintains that Ukraine has done "everything possible" to obtain the status as a candidate for EU membership

MADRID, 16 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has assured this Wednesday that his country has done "everything possible" to obtain the status as a candidate for membership of the European Union, after receiving the support for it from the prime ministers of Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia, countries that already have such status.

"Today we are as close to this status as we could have dreamed of even a few years ago. Ukraine has done everything possible to obtain a candidacy," the Ukrainian leader said in his daily message to the Ukrainian public.

Zelenski has maintained this Wednesday a meeting in kyiv with the prime minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic; and the one from Albania, Edi Rama; in addition to the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski --who was present via video call--.

The Ukrainian president thanked the prime ministers of these three countries, which already have the status as candidates for membership of the Union, for their express support so that Ukraine also joins the list of potential candidates.

Likewise, he has urged his Western allies to grant his country candidate status because Russia "would not be the same if it simply observed our successes in foreign policy", and recalled that the pressure of gas on Europe "is growing again" .

The College of Commissioners of the European Union, the body that brings together the members of the European Commission, held a first orientation debate on Monday on Ukraine's accession to the EU a few days after the opinion on the conditions for joining the European bloc scheduled for Friday.

This first debate between commissioners is the step prior to Friday when they will meet again to adopt the final text with the opinion of Brussels, a necessary preliminary procedure for the heads of state and government to discuss at their summit on June 23 and 24 if they grant candidate status to this country.
