Wetselaar (Cepsa) asks to simplify the regulation to promote green hydrogen and biofuels

MADRID, 26 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The CEO of Cepsa, Maarten Wetselaar, assured this Thursday that one of the main challenges for the energy transition is the simplification of regulation, a measure that, in his opinion, can promote the development of new technologies such as green hydrogen or biofuels.

"Spain has a great opportunity to lead the production of green energies. It is the best enclave in Europe to produce them as it has sun, wind and space, but we need to develop a regulatory ecosystem that allows its rapid implementation", urged the director in the framework of a business meeting organized by the CEOE and Cepyme.

Likewise, he considers that if the opportunity is "seized", the ports of southern Spain can "become the Rotterdam of the future" and export renewable energies "to the whole of Europe", something in which European funds can be of help, he has Wetselaar added.

Along these lines, the manager has pointed to digitization as a "lever" for the energy transition, since in his opinion it will make the use of energy more efficient, which he has considered as "the shortest way to decarbonize the economy" .

Within the framework of the business meeting, Wetselaar has reviewed some of the main lines of the company's strategy for 2030, a time horizon in which the energy company hopes to "lead the production of biofuels and green hydrogen in Spain and Portugal", both to decarbonise its activity and that of its clients.

"The green molecules that we will produce will be key to decarbonizing sectors such as aviation, heavy transport or maritime," Wetselaar highlighted, who also recalled that to carry out its strategy the company will invest around 8,000 million euros.

Regarding the price of fuel and the possibility that the Government extend beyond June 30 the bonus of 20 cents per liter in force since last April 1, the director of the energy company stressed that "the measures should be focused on towards the most vulnerable groups, which are those with the most pressing need".

The president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, and his counterpart from Cepyme, Gerardo Cuerva, also participated in the business meeting.
