Vox proposes to regulate the use of the Castilian denomination of municipalities throughout the national territory

They ask that the municipalities that only have the place name in the co-official language restore the version in Spanish

MADRID, 2 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Vox Parliamentary Group has presented a Non-Legal Proposal in which they request the regulation of the use of traditional Castilian toponymy throughout the national territory in the face of the appearance of regulations with legal status that have "allowed and encouraged" the banning of the use of the Castilian establishing that the only official denomination is that of the co-official language.

Those of Santiago Abascal point out that in some municipalities and provinces the place name in Spanish has been replaced by its denomination in the vernacular language in favor of identity discourses. Thus, this "attempt to annihilate the language" has resulted in "state and regional laws that twist" the interpretation of article 3 of the Constitution in terms of place names and official denominations.

Thus, the text of the NLP states that as a consequence of these laws "they have been erased from the legal system, as if they had never existed, Castilian toponyms that are still widely used today, such as Lérida, Gerona, Orense or Fuenterrabía".

For this reason, Vox asks with this NLP - which will be discussed in the Committee on Territorial Policy and Public Function - that the Government adopt a set of measures to guarantee compliance with the aforementioned precept of the Constitution, as well as to regulate the use of the Castilian toponymy so that it is official throughout Spain and that it shares said official status with that of the other Spanish languages of the corresponding region.

Likewise, they request that the double denomination be restored, in Spanish and in the respective vernacular, in those territorial entities that have been deprived of it, "promoting for this purpose the repeal of the norms that have materialized the exclusion of Spanish."

They also urge the adoption of the necessary measures in terms of local government so that, while maintaining the jurisdiction for "the change of its name" in the municipalities, the traditional Castilian toponymy is preserved along with that corresponding to the co-official language.

In this key, they demand that it be guaranteed that the regulatory norms of the Registry of Local Entities, the Central Registry of Cartography and the National Cartographic System require the version in Spanish for the registration, registration and incorporation to be valid.
