Turkey stresses that Sweden and Finland must strictly comply with their agreement in view of their accession to NATO

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Turkey has stressed this Monday that Sweden and Finland will have to comply with the entirety of the memorandum signed with Ankara in view of their accession to NATO, after the agreement reached on June 28, on the eve of the Atlantic Alliance summit in the capital of Spain.

"If they do not comply, we will not accept them in NATO", said the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in an interview with the Turkish television network NTV, in which he stressed that this memorandum "is very beneficial" for Stockholm and Helsinki.

"If these countries do not keep their promises, we will act appropriately," he said. In this sense, she has stressed that "it is a commitment in writing" and "binding". For this reason, he has emphasized that "none of these countries can enter NATO" if he does not respect what was signed.

The heads of state and government of NATO formally agreed on June 29 to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of the Atlantic Alliance, one day after Turkey lifted the veto after the trilateral memorandum signed in the framework of the summit of Madrid.
